On my bookshelf this fall...

I can tell it's time for me to share my reading list with you again because I have a new stack of books that simultaneously thrills and delights me while occasionally overwhelming me!

Here are the books I'm devouring this quarter:

  1. The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time. by Jim Loehr & Tony Schwartz. This book takes lessons from high performance athletes and pulls them into the professional world. Their techniques seem infinitely logical in a world where there is simply never enough time. It also just so happens to support my contention that more than managing people, projects, contracts, children, households or time...we manage our energy and the rest takes care of itself.

  2. Range: How Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World. by David Epstein. Every time I read a chapter in this book, I am bursting at the seems to share the fascinating examples with my family, my neighbors, and my clients. It's shaping the way I think about my work, my parenting, and my life.

  3. Whole Brain Living by Jill Bolte Taylor. Dr. Taylor's Ted talk - My Stroke of Insight - was the first to go viral and it is incredibly good. This book explains how we can all engage the best of our left and right brain to create a more balanced life in every way you can imagine.

  4. The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist. Cultivating a healthy money mindset has been a frequent focus of mine over the last few years. This book continues that journey for me with both familiar and fresh perspectives.

  5. The Way of Integrity by Martha Beck. Whenever I find myself drifting back into purely mainstream views on coaching and development, Martha's captivating blend of science and spirituality reminds me of how much more simple it is to honor truth over convention. When we squeeze ourselves into the boxes of others creation it feels tight, confining, and miserable. When we listen to our own head and heart, the path can be scary but it's straightforward.

  6. Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. I listened to this book first, narrated by the author. But I was constantly texting myself epiphanies so it was finally time to get a copy and re-read with pen and highlighter in hand. Something for leaders, educators, parents, and citizens of all kinds.

What are you reading?

Much love,

Marijke Ocean
