Should I stay or should I go?

Keep commitments. Follow through. Show up. Keep at it. Don't be a quitter. Never give up. Do what you say you are going to do. Keep your word. Stick with it. Ain't nothin' easy. Finish what you start. There is always more to learn. Don't run away from a challenge.

Any of this sound familiar? Would you add any other familiar advice to this grouping?

Deciding to move on from something is complicated. And these familiar phrases, or ones like them, often further complicate our decision making.

The "should I stay or should I go" decision has often been one of the most fraught ones for me.

In part because I see a great deal of truth and wisdom in many of those statements above. It's also because I don't want to be ... or be called ... a quitter.

And yet, in those moments I also experience a pull to leave, end, or exit a situation. So the tug of war inside me is: "Am I quitting or is this (job, relationship, party, bike ride) complete?"

I believe we are craving completion. As in:

We all want to learn and grow. A relationship, job, or small interaction is completed when we have been taught the lessons it was meant to teach of us. Notice I didn't say "all it could teach us" - this would be in an impossible expectation.

I really appreciated this blog post on the difference between completing and quitting by the Conscious Leadership Group.

Check it out and tell me what you think!

Cheers,

Marijke Ocean
