My Summer Reading List

Am I the only one in total awe that there are just so many interesting topics in the world!?!?!?

I am sharing an excerpt of my summer reading list today because the length of my list mostly doesn't stress me out but I feel typing it all out would really just stress us both out and that's not what I am after.

Here are the books ready for the pool, beach, picnic, porch, bedside table, rainy day:

  1. Say What You Mean by Oren Jay Sofer. How we speak matters. Not just because it has an impact on others but also because it reflects our inner mindset. Confidence, focus, listening, connection, and anxiety are all conveyed, created, or crushed in conversation. I'm so excited to dive into this book.

  2. The Duke & I (and others in the series) by Julia Quinn. Ok, I had to talk myself into confessing that this book was on my list. This is the series that inspired Bridgerton (of the Netflix craze). These are pure play and fun for me. ... And occasionally I imagine writing a romance novel of my own ... Words of encouragement welcomed. πŸ˜‚

  3. Conscious Luck by Gay Hendricks and Carol Kline. Gay's teachings on the Zone of Genius and Upper Limit Problems are among my favorites for myself and clients. In this new book he talks about how we can "plant the seeds of good fortune." I say this is fun for the "lucky" and "unlucky" on this list. Which are you? πŸ˜‰

  4. Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I've heard it's hilarious and poignant at the same time. Sounds just right to me.

  5. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. This book teaches a blend of science and indigenous wisdom about plants. Written by a SUNY professor of biology and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She's received praise from Jane Goodall, Krista Tippet, and Elizabeth Gilbert. (Swoon.) I often feel I am reconnecting with ancient wisdom and then discovering the science to support it in parallel so I can't wait to get more of that here!

  6. 21-day Racial Equity Challenge by United Way of Buffalo & Erie County. Sign up and get an email a day with videos, articles, and other short bites of insight and perspective on racial equity. You can start the challenge anytime. I'm on Day 7 and I've found it thought provoking and accessible.

When I share a list of books like this, one of my great delights is the replies you send me with what YOU are reading...books, articles, magazines, podcasts...I love it all, so do email back and let me know!

Much Love,

Marijke Ocean
