If I had to choose just one question to coach myself.

I love great questions. As a leader and mentor and now as a coach I consider great questions little gems that I collect.

If I had to pick one question that most helps me coach myself when I am really, really stuck it would be:

“If I knew it would be impossible to fail…what would I do right now?”

One of the reasons that I think it works so well is that it cuts through all the stories running in my head.

I don’t get stuck over “small” things.

Perhaps like you, I have a lot of skills for problem solving and creative thinking. I usually see a multitude of options ahead of me. Until I don't...

So, being stuck is a big deal. It’s usually a sign that there are many interconnected stories with limiting beliefs woven in that have clouded my eyes to the options available.

Untangling the knot of stories is a worthy endeavor but it will take time and discipline – both of which I probably feel depleted of in all my “stuckness.”

“If I knew it would be impossible to fail” usually knocks out 80-90% of my stories…. If I can suspend disbelief on those limiting tales of woe for just a moment, I can find a little clearing in that fog and come up with some options!

One other super power of this question – by temporarily knocking out all those limiting stories, I get a reminder of my higher self, the one who knows all the stories are just stories and that I can put my attention on a bigger purpose or potential inside of me.

What are your “go to” self-coaching tools?

Love,

Marijke Ocean
