What I'm reading...

How do you read? One book at a time? Newspapers, magazines, and short stories? Fiction or non-fiction? History or futurism?

When it comes to books, I read multiple books at a time.

This can be annoying if you lent me a book and are waiting for it to be returned. 🀨...πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Here are the books I'm working through right now:

  • The Splendid & The Vile by Erik Larson. About Winston Churchill's leadership during World War II. I'm often delighted by surprising things in here...like the nationally sponsored journaling of private citizens in the UK that are used as source material.

  • Faith by Sharon Salzberg. Part memoir and part spiritual teaching, I'm revisiting this book published in 2002 which I originally read against the backdrop of 9/11 and now am drawn to for the intimate consideration of when, why, and how we feel compelled to surrender, trust, or give ourselves over to something despite the unknown.

  • The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership by Jim Dethmer, Diana Chapman, and Kaley Warner Klemp. I recently completed a 4-week training with the authors which has inspired me to revisit the book a second time in a much deeper and closer reading. I love the precise way these guys tackle topics like responsibility and candor.

  • Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. As I mentioned in an article a few weeks back, if you are struggling with ... anything... a good night's rest is a great place to start.

  • Hungry Hearts: Essays on Courage, Desire, and Belonging. These personal essays are incredible reminders of the seemingly endless potential for hope to spring out of our struggles. Also, how we can grow by getting curious about the little things ... like bristling at being called ambitious or having lots of unfinished projects.

When I share a list of books like this, one of my great delights is the replies you send me with what YOU are reading...books, articles, magazines, podcasts...I love it all, so do email back and let me know!

Much love,

Marijke Ocean

P.S. During spring break I sent out an article about some of the common reasons we end up feeling underappreciated...and some simple strategies for turning this around. These techniques are road tested in my own life and they get results with my clients. If you missed it, you can find it here.
